Family Weekend Trips

Memorable adventures for the whole family — short, practical, and designed for real life with children. No stress, just great experiences.

Big memories don't need long journeys

Family travel is often framed as an expensive, exhausting undertaking — weeks of logistics, long-haul flights, and children who are too jet-lagged to enjoy the destination. But the reality is simpler.

A two-night camping trip, a farm stay, a seaside weekend — these short, local escapes create lasting memories precisely because they're manageable. Children thrive in environments that are novel but not overwhelming.

Slowova curates family-friendly destinations with practical filters in mind: journey length, child-appropriate activities, accommodation safety, and real-world value.

Choose your family's adventure type

Different families need different kinds of trips. Here are the styles we recommend most.

Camping & Glamping

The classics, done well. From basic tent pitches near rivers to luxurious glamping pods with real beds — camping is the most reliable way to get children genuinely excited about nature.

Farm Stays & Rural Cottages

Children love farm animals, open fields, and the freedom of countryside space. Farm stays offer hands-on experiences — collecting eggs, feeding goats — that no theme park can replicate.

Beach & Seaside Breaks

Sand, rock pools, ice cream, and sea — the formula is timeless. We focus on quieter, less crowded coastal destinations that are genuinely enjoyable rather than stressfully busy.

Our favourite family activities

Screen-free, budget-conscious, and genuinely fun for all ages. These are the activities we return to again and again.

Wild Swimming & River Exploration

Safe, shallow river spots and designated wild swimming areas offer hours of natural play for children while adults relax nearby. Pack a picnic and make a day of it.

Family Cycling Routes

Traffic-free trails and converted railway paths are ideal for families with younger children. Many popular cycling regions offer bike hire and mapped family routes.

Nature Scavenger Hunts

Pre-printed or self-made scavenger hunts transform a simple woodland walk into an adventure. Children of all ages engage more deeply with nature when they have something to find.

Stargazing Nights

Away from city light pollution, the night sky becomes a genuine spectacle. Download a free star map app, bring blankets, and let the universe do the entertaining.

Outdoor Cooking Together

From open campfire meals to outdoor pizza ovens at farm stays, cooking together outdoors is one of the most memorable shared family experiences there is.

The Cotswolds, England

Honey-coloured villages, open meadows, and gently rolling hills make the Cotswolds one of England's best family weekend destinations. Child-friendly walking trails, pubs with gardens, and farm parks make it easy to fill two to three days without ever running out of ideas.

  • 90 min from London or Birmingham
  • Excellent for families with children 3–14
  • Best April–September
France

The Ardèche, Southern France

The Ardèche river gorge is one of France's most spectacular family playgrounds. Safe supervised canoe routes, cave systems, and abundant campsites make this an ideal summer family destination with genuine natural drama.

  • Driveable from Lyon, Marseille, or Montpellier
  • Ideal for children who love water and outdoors
  • June–August for river activities

Making family trips easier

Keep travel time short

For children under eight, aim for a maximum of two hours travel each way. The shorter the journey, the more of the weekend you actually enjoy at the destination.

Check safety facilities

Before booking, verify that the destination has appropriate medical facilities nearby, safe swimming areas if water is involved, and suitable accommodation for your children's ages.

Always have a wet weather plan

Identify at least one indoor activity or covered space before you travel. A rainy day without a plan can quickly undo the best-laid family getaway.

Pack light, bring essentials

Overpacking creates stress. Focus on layers, sturdy footwear, and a small first aid kit. Most children are happiest with fewer toys and more freedom to explore.

Involve children in planning

Let children choose one activity or destination element. Ownership of the plan dramatically increases their engagement and reduces resistance to unfamiliar experiences.

Document the small moments

Give older children a disposable camera or simple device to document their own perspective. Their photographs become treasured memories and are often far more interesting than the adults' shots.
